Shorland Old Farm, Exmoor, Devon

VENUE: Shorland Old Farm, Barton Lane, Challacombe, Bratton Fleming, North Devon EX31 4UB

Shorland Old Farm is on the edge of Exmoor National Park. Our first visit to Shorlands, earlier in 2016, confirmed our hopes that it would be a great venue for courses. We couldn’t have had better hosts, the food was wonderful and accommodation so comfortable and convenient. With the studio just across from the farmhouse it makes for an ideal and relaxing venue for students, with no travelling, or concerns about where to dine out each evening.

All our courses are run with the aim of encouraging a very friendly atmosphere that is supportive to everyone whatever level they may be at. So please don’t worry whether you will be good enough to come on the course! We always have a range of abilities from those who have never even picked up a pastel to those who have been on several courses. We all have something to learn from each other.

All meals are provided from your arrival on Thursday afternoon for a welcoming Devon cream tea to Monday morning breakfast departure. Tuition in the studio is from 10am to 4pm each day Fri/Sat/Sun.

Nel and Rebecca will be there to welcome you and will join you for dinner on Thursday and Sunday. We decided to extend the course to the Monday morning as everyone is always tired by the last day and we thought it would be nice to have an end of course dinner and leave afresh the following morning!

Course A  – ‘The New and Improvers’ Shorlands Residential Course
Thurs 23rd March – Mon 27
th March

This course serves as an introduction to pastels but is also suitable for ‘improvers’ too and those wishing to take the next steps in developing their painting, and learning more. We will both be demonstrating as usual and will introduce some of the different types of pastels available and explore, in more depth than before, a range of different techniques and ways of using the medium. It is a refreshing chance to have a go at new ways of working, learn about colour and how to use it, and then enjoy the benefits of working from life and outdoors (weather permitting).

NEW Individual tutorials – we have added this feature to the courses, which gives you the opportunity to discuss your work one to one. An allotted time slot will be available for those that wish to have more in depth feedback about their work, at the end of each day, between 4 and 6. It is not compulsory but just an added benefit to coming on the course if you wish to take advantage of it.

 Price for Shorlands New and Improvers Residential Course for 4 nights and 3 days;

Single £710. Shared occupancy £662. Non painting partner £268.
This includes 4 nights accommodation, all meals, 3 full days tuition, and all materials.
Arriving Thursday afternoon and departing Monday morning.

Course C – ‘Inspiration from Life’ Shorlands Residential Course
Thurs 3rd – Mon 7th August 2017

This course will focus on painting from life and encourage students to experiment with using pastels in ways that they may not have tried before. There will be an emphasis on working from life but also how to use reference in a more creative way. The course will include demonstrations as usual by both of us.

 NEW Individual tutorials, giving you the opportunity to discuss your work one to one, will be available for those that would wish to have more in depth feedback or to get answers to particular questions they have about their painting. It is not compulsory, but is just an added benefit to coming on the course. These will be held at the end of each day between 4-6pm.

Price for ‘Pastels an Inspiration’ Residential Course for 4 nights and 3 days;
Single £710. Shared occupancy £662. Non painting partner £268
This includes 4 nights accommodation, all meals, 3 full days tuition, and all materials.

Cober Hill, near Scarborough, is a new venue for us that we are really excited about, as it offers a great deal in terms of opportunities to paint outside, while staying within the grounds of this Joseph Rowntree inspired educational venue. Coupled with a spacious studio it allows flexibility whatever the weather!

Perched above the seaside town of Scarborough, Cober Hill has extensive grounds with wild meadows, sea views, garden views, landscapes and buildings, all without having to leave the grounds. We will be using their large Joseph Rowntree Convention Centre Studio where there is ample room. We have our own lounge with TV and all the bedrooms are on the ground level, each with an en suite. There are further opportunities for evening entertainment within the grounds in the form of Croquet, *not crochet! Boules, Clock golf, Tennis and indoor and outdoor Skittles! All activities are of course optional but it gives you an idea of the wealth of enjoyment there is to be had at Cober Hill. DATES; Sat 23rd – Sat 30th September 2017

 Bill and Lois Breckon have been running courses for some years at The Watermill and they kindly asked us to run a course in 2015 but we were already rather booked up. So we are delighted to say this will be our first trip! This is what they say about their lovely venue…

 “For centuries artists have drawn their inspiration from the Tuscan landscape and you could find few better places to enjoy your art and improve your skills than the beautiful Watermill at Posara, set beside a river in a gentle valley.
You’ll stay in stylish bedrooms in elegant buildings around a sunlit courtyard. You’ll take leisurely breakfasts and enjoy mouth-watering evening meals at the mill (and also dine out in nearby restaurants to sample local dishes and wines).
The mills gardens, millstream and riverside walks are all yours to enjoy.”

Comments from previous students to this venue include…

“An enchanting place – I really loved it, endless delightful subjects to paint”

“From the moment I stepped into my apartment and saw and heard the river, I realised it was going to be very special”

“We’ve been on many painting holidays but this was the best ever.”
