SHORLAND OLD FARM, EXMOOR
Barton Lane, Challacombe, Bratton Fleming, North Devon
Shorland Old Farm is on the edge of Exmoor National Park. Our first visit to Shorlands, earlier in 2016, confirmed our hopes that it would be a great venue for courses. We couldn’t have had better hosts, the food was wonderful and accommodation so comfortable and convenient. With the studio just across from the farmhouse it makes for an ideal and relaxing venue for students, with no travelling, or concerns about where to dine out each evening.
All meals are provided from your arrival on Thursday afternoon for a welcoming Devon cream tea to Monday morning breakfast departure.
Nel and Rebecca will be there to welcome you and will join you for dinner on Thursday and Sunday.
Tuition in the studio is from 10am to 4pm each day Fri/Sat/Sun.

THE WATERMILL, POSARA, TUSCANY, ITALY
Bill and Lois Breckon have been running courses for some years at The Watermill and they kindly asked us to run a course in 2015 but we were already rather booked up. So we are delighted to say this will be our first trip! This is what they say about their lovely venue…
“For centuries artists have drawn their inspiration from the Tuscan landscape and you could find few better places to enjoy your art and improve your skills than the beautiful Watermill at Posara, set beside a river in a gentle valley.
You’ll stay in stylish bedrooms in elegant buildings around a sunlit courtyard. You’ll take leisurely breakfasts and enjoy mouth-watering evening meals at the mill (and also dine out in nearby restaurants to sample local dishes and wines).
The mills gardens, millstream and riverside walks are all yours to enjoy.”
Comments from previous students to this venue include…
“An enchanting place – I really loved it, endless delightful subjects to paint”
“From the moment I stepped into my apartment and saw and heard the river, I realised it was going to be very special”
“We’ve been on many painting holidays but this was the best ever.”
We are very excited about this course, as it is our first New Pastel School course abroad. The course will include some painting en plein air, some studio based work and trips out to beautiful locations. There is a more detailed example of a typical itinerary on their website. What we seek to offer is a new experience of using pastels outside and to introduce the joys of exploring how inspiring another countries landscape and countryside can be. As ever the atmosphere will be relaxed with one to one help, demonstrations and lots of lovely food! We seek to inspire you all to try something different and join us.
Included in the cost of your holiday at the Watermill are: tuition, accommodation (including all linen and towels), pre-dinner aperitifs, all meals and wines (including outings to charming local restaurants) and all local transportation (including transfers to Pisa airport and an excursion by train to Lucca or the Cinque Terre). Materials are not included, please see list of things that you will need to bring.
NB Flights to Pisa are not included.
PLEASE NOTE BOOKING FOR THIS COURSE ONLY IS DIRECT WITH THE WATERMILL NOT THROUGH THE NEW PASTEL SCHOOL

We have always enjoyed running courses at Stoke Canon Jubilee Hall as there’s plenty of room and it also allows us to offer a course for those that wish to arrange their own accommodation or who live within travelling distance. There is plenty to see nearby from the beautiful city of Exeter to the south Devon coast and beautiful Exmoor and Dartmoor.
How to Get There
The Jubilee Hall in Stoke Canon is easy to find. If you look at google maps you will see that Stoke Canon is built on a main road, the A396, with a post office on one side and a pub, The Stoke Canon Inn, on the other side of the road. To the right of the pub is a car park and the Jubilee Hall is on the right side of the car park. Parking is free all day.
Approaching form the M5, take junction 29 and go through Pinhoe, taking a left at Church Hill, as you would to visit me, but carry on to the end of the road, turn right at the T junction. Follow that road as it bends to the left and down the hill. At the bottom of the hill turn right at the T junction. Cross the river, go a little way into the village, and you will see the pub and car park on your right.
From Exeter the easiest way is to take the A377 Cowley Bridge Road, and then take the A396 to Tiverton. It goes along the river valley, then bends left to cross the river, goes a little way through the village, and you will see the pub and car park on your right.
From Tiverton take the A396 Exeter road, after 10 miles, as you go through Stoke Canon the pub and car park are on your left.
